Co-ops and Congos and Customs Galore–or, Keeping Little Turtle Off the Road

One of the things I adore about being a wahm is that *I* tailor my daily activities in alignment with the changing needs of my family. We recently added a new sprout to the color farm family, and Little Turtle, as we affectionately call him (because he hates to be on his back and likes to keep his diaper on, like a protective shell) needs us to stay close to home for a while. Our regular Saturday farmer’s market is an hour drive each way, and it’s been so hot–we’ve decided to ramp up our at home selling to make up for the loss of that market each week.

So, I joined a congo–a cooperative of women who are all wahms, selling their wares separately under the banner of a single store, as in a boutique. It’s Universal Mama. I’m enjoying being back in a group of creative folks, and having a dedicated stocking time (each Monday at 9pm CST) keeps me focussed on producing.

I’m also taking on customs orders regularly. It’s a fun way to give people exactly what they want (hopefully, or at least close enough that they don’t complain publicly), and a good way to keep people thinking about ordering from us…when I post customs pictures, I nearly always get an email asking when I’ll be accepting more. :D You can see examples of our custom work in the gallery in the sidebar, just as soon as I figure out how to get it there!

Finally, I’m doing co-ops regularly. I love that moms can come together and place enough orders with me, collated and organized by the co-op hostess, to get the wholesale price I would usually only offer to resellers. Another great thing about the internet! Currently, I have an ongoing co-op here, at The Crunchy Cooperative. (Besides my co-op they are running several others, on all kinds of cool stuff.) It will close on August 27, so run over there if you want to get involved. While I wait for them to give me their final order, I;m working on my last co-op. which was on MDC. It should be complete soon…look for pics! Here’s a picture of what my first co-op order looked like, all organized by size and colorway, and ready to be sent out to the co-op hostess, who packed up everyone’s individual orders and sent them out to their final destinations.
